A reward flyer printed on paper in 1958 showing photos of the family and describing the descriptions of the missing people
The disappearance of the Martin family

Location: Cascade Locks, Oregon

Agencies Involved: Hood River County Sheriff’s Office, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office

Executive Summary

After nearly 70 years, the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identified the remains of Kenneth, Barbara, and Barbara (“Barbie”) Martin. This breakthrough concludes a mystery dating back to December 1958, when the family of five vanished during a trip to the Columbia River Gorge.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office has officially closed the investigation, finding no evidence of criminal activity.

Key Highlights of the Investigation

  • In 2024, a private diver located the Martin family car in a catch-basin near the original locks in Cascade Locks.
  • In early 2025, a complex recovery operation using a crane retrieved the vehicle's frame and components. Subsequent dives in late 2025 led to the discovery of human remains.
  • Identification was made possible through a partnership with Othram, Inc., a laboratory specializing in forensic genetic genealogy.
  • Despite the remains being submerged for decades, scientists successfully generated a DNA profile for Kenneth Martin. Based on this profile and the totality of the evidence, Barbara and Barbie Martin were also positively identified.

A Collaborative Effort

This resolution was the result of a coordinated effort between local, state, and private partners. In a public statement issued April 16, 2026, the Hood River County Sheriff's Office extended special thanks to:

  • Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office: For critical support in locating historical records.
  • Othram, Inc. & RTI: For the specialized genetic testing and analysis.
  • NamUs: For providing financial assistance to fund the DNA testing.
