On May 24, 1924, Corrections Superintendent Ed Diedrich was killed in an accidental explosion at the Kelly Butte Rock Quarry, which was located adjacent to the Rocky Butte Jail. Superintendent Diedrich, Powderman Hall, and an inmate were setting explosives when they prematurely detonated, killing all three and injuring several other inmates.

Superintendent Diedrich was 46 years old at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife.
