  • What kind of criminal record would disqualify me?

Any felony conviction. Also, anyone with misdemeanor convictions relating to domestic violence, crimes against children or sex crimes cannot work for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office. Misdemeanors related to escape, intimidation, obstructing government admin, perjury and forgery/fraud are also automatic disqualifiers. Email backgrounds@mcso.us if you need more clarification.

  • What kind of driving records would disqualify me?

If you've received a DUII in the last five years, you will not be able to proceed with your application, but you can apply again once you've been clear for five years. Check with backgrounds@mcso.us for more information about traffic code convictions.

  • I have parking tickets. Can I still apply?

Absolutely. Parking violations will not exclude an applicant, unless there are an egregious number or a pattern of disregarding disabled parking, or something similar that indicates a lack of integrity. But do the right thing and make sure your fines are paid.

  • Are there any other automatically disqualifying factors?

In addition to certain criminal and driving related convictions, these may also be cause for automatic disqualification:

    • Inability to obtain an Oregon or Washington driver's license.
    • Dishonorable discharge from any branch of the US Armed Forces (some exceptions may apply).
    • Discharge from another law enforcement or corrections agency for cause that would be basis for discharge from MCSO.
    • Evidence of cheating, dishonesty or willful misleading during any part of the application process.
  • What other information will I need to include on the Personal History Statement?

The Personal History Statement (PHS) requires comprehensive information. You will be asked for a full employment history and will need to provide the names and phone number of all previous employers from the last 10 years.

We will ask for the details of your family members, and of your current and former significant others. You will be asked to list all former complete addresses you have had in the past 10 years.

It is extremely important that you are honest and accurate. The word “ever” is used frequently throughout the PHS. Ensure that you report any event, action or incident that has occurred at any point in your life, regardless of how long ago it occurred or if you believe there no longer is any documentation listing the event. If there is something you are concerned about telling us, it is much better for you to be completely honest and discuss the details and context with the Background Investigator than it is to be untruthful. We take integrity seriously.

Dishonesty at any stage is a disqualifier from the process.
