For Multnomah County Corrections Deputy Jason Blaesing, a decade of service can be distilled into one guiding principle: “I treat people how I want to be treated.”  

It sounds simple, but that mindset helps keep Deputy Blaesing, his colleagues, and other adults in custody safe. By leading with empathy, Deputy Blaesing, has spent near 10 years building trust and maintaining professionalism with people from every walk of life. 

Currently, Deputy Blaesing splits his time between master control and recreation supervision. Both roles require focus and adaptability – skills he’s honed by staying grounded in empathy and respect. He credits much of his success to a simple realization that every person in custody has a story and consistency is the key to managing those stories safely. 

Deputy Blaesing’s commitment to service and others doesn’t stop at the end of his shift. A defining part of his career is his ability to show up for his family just as consistently as he does for his colleagues.  

“The flexibility of this job and my schedule have made it possible for me to be present with my daughter throughout the week,” Deputy Blaesing said. “As a single dad, that’s huge for me.” 

When asked what advice he’d share with the next generation of public safety professionals, Deputy Blaesing answer straightforward. 

“Don’t take anything personally,” he said.  

“Adults in custody will have hard days. Don’t assume it’s about you,” Deputy Blaesing said. “Sometimes they may be upset with their family, lawyers, or [the] circumstances.” 

By separating the person from the behavior, Deputy Blaesing helps to ensure that dignity remains at the center of every interaction.
