The East Metro Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team is comprised of members from both Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and Gresham Police Department (GPD). Currently there are eight MCSO members assigned to this team, two Sergeants and 6 Deputies. The team has two SWAT Commanders, one from each organization, with shared command and responsibilities.

The SWAT Teams spend a lot of time training for and preparing for the response to high risk incidents. There are two distinct types of events that will cause the SWAT Team to be deployed. The first is planned events, such as search/arrest warrants that are served after search warrant has been issued by a judge. The second are unplanned events such as; responding to an active shooter situation, a barricaded suspect who may have fled from a crime or a hostage incident.

The SWAT Team deploys various types of technology to include the use of thermal and night vision, robots, less lethal, lethal weapons and a multitude of breaching equipment. No matter whether the incident is planned or not the SWAT Team’s mission remains the same. That mission is the safe resolution of the incident and the restoration of peace.
