Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Volunteer Services

The Sheriff's Office is not processing volunteer applications at this time. We expect to begin processing applications on Sept. 6, 2011. Please contact Captain Bobbi Luna at 503-988-4326 with any questions you might have.

What types of volunteer opportunities does MCSO have?
MCSO placements are wide-ranging. Volunteers are provided opportunities to support work units in the business services, corrections, and law enforcement divisions.

How many hours do volunteers work?
Volunteer hours vary depending on the type of assignment and the availability of the volunteer.

How do I apply?
All volunteers and interns must complete the following steps and be approved by Sheriff’s Office Administration:

VOLUNTEERS
• Contact the Volunteer Services Unit via email inquiry or telephone
• Answer pre-screening questions
• Complete and submit application packet
• Pass criminal history check
• Complete personal interview
• Discuss and review job assignment and expectations
• Complete orientation and training session prior to start of assignment
• Complete fingerprinting and MCSO ID processing

INTERNS
Qualifying college students can earn credit while exploring a career in the criminal justice field. Placements are designed to meet the students’ goals and give them opportunities to experience a variety of areas within the Sheriff’s Office.

• Contact the Volunteer Services Unit at least 10-12 weeks prior to the start of the registered term
• Answer pre-screening questions
• Complete and submit application packet
• Pass criminal history check
• Provide contact information for seven personal references
• Provide complete employment history
• If military service, provide DD214 (Member 4 copy)
• Complete personal interview
• Attend an orientation and training session prior to start of assignment
• Complete fingerprinting and MCSO ID processing
• After selection, submit internship job description, goals, and objectives forms
• Submit copy of internship evaluation
• Submit monthly report documenting all hours worked and special projects

Where are the work sites?
Volunteers and interns work at a variety of locations throughout Multnomah County including the following:

• Multnomah County Detention Center
• Multnomah County Inverness Jail
• Multnomah County Courthouse
• Hansen Building
• River Patrol
• Multnomah Building
