The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations
Unit (SIU) is involved in regional wide investigations of narcotics,
general vice, including prostitution, internal investigations,
highway narcotics interdiction and other criminal activity investigations
as assigned by the Sheriff. The Special Investigations Unit is
often utilized to locate and arrest felony fugitives who are wanted
by other, police agencies, parole officers, and judges throughout
the Multnomah County area. The unit also assists other local,
state and federal law enforcement agencies in narcotics investigations
and tactical applications. The primary emphasis of the unit is
narcotics enforcement.
The Special Investigations Unit is also involved in drug education
and presents training information to MCSO personnel, local schools,
organizations, businesses and government agencies routinely. MCSO
Special Investigations Unit narcotic canine also participates
in school searches and presentations. The Special Investigations
Unit has been routinely used for internal investigations that
require surveillance for numerous agencies within Multnomah County
government, including Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office
Corrections, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office civilian
support offices, and Multnomah County Financing.
The present makeup of the Special Investigations unit is four
deputies, one Gresham Police officer, one investigative technician
and a sergeant. Narcotics cases are initiated by unit members
through information gained from citizen complaints, surveillances,
informants, historical information and undercover activities.
The Special Investigations Unit is supported by one canine narcotics
detection dog, an aerial surveillance plane with four on-call
pilots, and Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office detectives
and patrol members who provide manpower for surveillance and tactical
applications.
