MCSO Ride-A-Long Program
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- You must be 18 years of age or older at the time of the Ride-A-Long.
- You must reside in unincorporated Multnomah County, or be a resident of the City of Maywood Park or the City of Wood Village. If you live in the cities of Portland, Gresham, Troutdale or Fairview, contact your local police department about their Ride-A-Long program.
OR
Are currently a Lateral Deputy Sheriff, Recruit Deputy Sheriff or Reserve Deputy Sheriff applicant with MCSO. Verification of an applicant’s status will be made by the MCSO Human Resources Department prior to scheduling the Ride-A-Long

Never been arrested.
- Have had no more than 3 moving violations in the previous 12 months and no more than 3 license suspensions in your total driving history. Suspensions for medical reasons are allowed.
RULES
- Ride-A-Longs are 4 hours in duration.
- Picture identification is required at the time of the appointment.
- No firearms are allowed during the Ride-A-Long, even if the applicant has a valid concealed handgun license (CHL). No other weapons such as leatherman tools, pocket knives, personal defense sprays, etc. are allowed.
- Multnomah County values and respects its handicapped citizens, however, due to the intensity of emergency vehicle operations, if you have vertigo or balance problems, have trouble getting in or out of vehicles without assistance, or need vision or locomotion aides, it not recommended that you participate in a Ride-A-Long.
- Ride-A-Longs are restricted to one per applicant per calendar year.
If you meet these requirements, you can pick-up a Ride-A-Long application in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office Hansen Building. The Hansen Building is located at 12240 NE Glisan Street in Portland. For security reasons, only applications that are filled out in person will be accepted. Any application that is faxed, emailed or mailed will not be accepted.
*Ride-A-Longs are subject to staff availability and operational requirements. By submitting an application you will be subject to a background check. Applicants may be excluded from the Ride-A-Long program at the discretion of the Sheriff or his representative.
