EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYMENT
Multnomah County will give consideration to all qualified applicants for appointment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, physical or mental disability, political affiliations, sexual orientation, gender identity, source of income, family status or any other nonmerit factor.

1. The selection process for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Reserve Unit begins with completing the application process online.

2. Upon receipt of the application, a preliminary background check of the information provided will be done. This will include a criminal history and driving record check.

3. If the results of the preliminary background check meet the Sheriff’s Office standards you may be scheduled for a written exam, which generally lasts approximately 4 hours. Upon successful completion of the written exam, you will be asked to complete a Statement of Personal History packet. The Sheriff's Office Background Unit will complete a comprehensive background investigation. All listed references will be contacted along with any other sources that may provide pertinent information on your suitability to serve as a Reserve Deputy. This background includes, but may not be limited to, a complete criminal history, driving record, past and present employment records, and credit history. Successful applicants may then be scheduled for an oral board, which generally lasts 30 minutes. Applicants successful with the interview process may be scheduled for psychological and physical exams, paid for by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

4. Successful candidates will attend either the Clackamas County Inter-agency Reserve Academy which generally begins in Mid-September and ends in February, or the Washington County Reserve Academy which generally begins in January and ends in April.

5. Upon graduation from the Reserve Academy you will attend a short "Mini-Academy." You will then enter an 18-month probation period to rate your performance and commitment and to determine if you are able to meet the high standards of the Sheriff's Office Reserve Unit. During part of this phase you are assigned to work with Field Training Officers (FTOs) who will provide training and evaluate your progress.

6. There is also some personal expense associated with being a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. You are expected to furnish your own weapon, and other equipment such as handcuffs, baton, flashlight, etc. This expense generally totals about $1000 - $1500 depending upon the equipment and the optional items you chose to purchase.

7. All Reserves are required to perform a mandatory minimum of 250 hours of service to the Sheriff's Office per year. This will include patrol, training, special details, and other activities.
