Reserve Deputy Program
Coordinator: Sergeant Lichatowich

Welcome to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Reserve site.  Here you will find information on what a Reserve Deputy is, the duties and job requirements, prerequisites and application information, along with the training offered.

TO APPLY

Mission:
The mission of the Reserve Deputy is to support and augment the Regular Deputy within the Law Enforcement Unit of the Sheriff's Office in the areas of Road and River Patrol and Community Services. Reserve Deputies also supplement the Regular Deputies in the normal performance of law enforcement duties and as needed during emergency or special operations.
Road Patrol:
The Reserve Deputy augments and supports the Regular Deputies by accomplishing tasks, which ensure that the Regular Deputies are utilized to the fullest extent possible in the performance of their duties. Reserves provide back up and cover functions and transport prisoners for the Regular Deputies. The Reserve Deputies also enforce traffic laws and perform other traditional law enforcement duties.
River Patrol:
Oregon law requires the Sheriff to provide law enforcement on the River and waterways of the State and as part of that requirement the Reserves man their own patrol boat and patrol the largest area of water in the state of Oregon. As with the road patrol the Reserve River Patrol, which operates year round, augments and supports the Regular Deputies in a similar fashion.
Mounted Patrol:
Formed in 1952, the Mounted Posse patrol in areas where horses are advantageous. This can include parks, campgrounds and hiking trails. Mounted Posse members also provide a valuable resource for many special details including parades and other public events.
Community Service:
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Reserves also perform many community service orientated activities commonly referred to as "Special Details." These include; traffic control for parades, competitions, and other community events; summer park patrols; security details for county, city and community functions and school sports and other events.

Once a person is selected for the Reserve Program, training will begin immediately within the MCSO agency until the next available academy date opens. Classes for the academy generally begin in September and run through May - although at times there may be other academy dates available. Most academies are conducted two week nights and one weekend day. The Academy is a commitment of everyone's time, money and energy.   We are dedicated to producing the best-trained Reserve Officers in the State of Oregon and therefore expect all candidates to exhibit a high degree of scholastic standing, professionalism and personal integrity.  There are also numerous practical exercises requiring satisfactory results, which test your learned knowledge and abilities.

The Academy is a classroom and "hands on" experience that teaches you how to be the best Reserve Officer you can be and will provide instruction that covers the following: Criminal Law, Emergency Vehicle Operation, Police Report Writing, Procedural Law, Patrol Procedures, Field Note Taking, Interview and Interrogation, Motor Carrier Safety, Crime Scene and Evidence Handling, Motor Vehicle Code, Traffic Law Enforcement, Marine Law, Robbery and Crimes in Progress, DUII Enforcement, Use of Chemical Agents, Firearms, Court Testimony and Presentation, Defensive Tactics, Search and Handcuff, Use of a Police Canine, Assault and Domestic Violence, Tactical Communication, Building Searches, First Aid and CPR, Community Policing, Drug Recognition, Juvenile Law, Bomb and Explosive Identification, and Arson Investigation.
