There
are other open death investigations within the Multnomah County Sheriff's
Office that will be examined by the Cold Case Unit.
- Marjorie
Finley: Finley, 42, was working as a clerk at a Plaid
Pantry store at 14110 N.E. Sandy Blvd. on Oct. 22, 1973, when
she was shot to death about 10:30 a.m. during an apparent robbery.
- Harold
E. Tyson: Hikers found Tyson’s badly decomposed
body on March 29, 1975, in a remote area north of U.S. 30 near
Rocky Point Road. Tyson, 37, had been living in the Kenton Hotel
in downtown Portland.
- Alison
Cauffman:
Cauffman, 14, of Southwest Portland was found dead June 21, 1973,
down a bank on the north side of Marine Drive opposite Interlachen
Lane. Cauffman was known to hang out with transients in the Washington
Park area.
- Charlene
Baurer: She was reported missing June 21, 1976, and her
badly decomposed body was discovered Sept. 26, 1976, near Northeast
82nd Avenue and Lombard Street.
- Unidentified
man: On Sept. 9, 1979, hikers discovered the skeleton
remains of a man about four miles east of Multnomah Falls Lodge.
The state medical examiner could not determine the cause of death
and subsequent investigative efforts have been directed towards
identification. In 2008, the Smithsonian Institution completed
an examination of the skeleton. No evidence yet uncovered rules
out the possibility of homicide, so the case remains open.
- Richard
K. Hamblin: On Oct. 12, 1981, two men broke into Hamblin's
home and got in a fight with the victim, who was stabbed and died.
One suspect was described as 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, 26-31 years
old, with black hair. The second was described as 5-foot-9, 180
pounds, 25-27 years old with light brown hair.
- George
W. Storms: Storms, 54, of Southeast Portland was found
Oct. 16, 1981, in the trunk of a car that had been towed to a
storage yard on Sept. 13, 1981, from Southeast 139th Street. He
had been shot. The car was registered to someone using an alias.
- Robert
E. Jones: Jones, 26, was found dead of a stab wound Jan.
15, 1983, in a phone booth near the Husky Truck Stop in Troutdale.
He had been living with a girlfriend under a nearby overpass.
- James
M. Anderson: Anderson, 44, and Erasmo Garcia got into
an argument about 5 a.m. June 12, 1983, outside of his apartment
on Northeast Killingsworth Street in Portland. Anderson was shot
once in the head. Garcia was arrested later in Colorado, but a
Multnomah County grand jury dropped charges against Garcia pending
additional evidence or information.
- Larry
B. Erickson: Erickson, 42, was found dead in his home
in the 8000 block of Northeast Wygant in Portland on Oct. 2, 1983.
He had been shot. No apparent motive was ever discovered.
- Wendy
M. Wilcox: Wilcox, 24, of Portland was reported missing
June 14, 1984, from the Winchell's Donut store on Northeast 102nd
Avenue and Glisan Street, where she worked. On Oct. 14, 1984,
hunters near the community of Packwood in Lewis County, Wash.,
discovered her remains.
- Unidentified
man: The skeletal remains of a still unidentified man
were found Nov. 6, 1984, on Northwest Rocky Point Road, about
three-tenths of a mile west of U.S. 30. The man had been dead
for at least six months. The probable cause of death was a gunshot
wound.
- Gerald
Rathman: Rathman, 31, of Troutdale disappeared Nov. 2,
1984, from a party at a home on Northeast Glisan Street and his
vehicle found several days later in Troutdale. His body was found
Dec. 12, 1984, on Gordon Creek Road near the Sandy River. Although
there was a person of interest in this case, no arrest was ever
made.
- Robert
J. Perea: Perea, 32, who witnesses said worked as a drug
dealer, was found Dec. 21, 1984, shot to death execution style
at his home on Southeast 165th Avenue.

Barbara M. Bolton: Bolton, 34, was a walk-away
from the Dammasch State Mental Hospital in Wilsonville whose remains
were found Dec. 2, 1988, just north of Marine Drive about three-quarters
of a mile west of the Troutdale Airport. She was last seen alive
on or around Oct. 10, 1988. The cause of death is undetermined,
but homicide is strongly suspected.
- Barbara
J. Stanley: Stanley, 38, was shot once in the chest at
9 p.m. March 22, 1989, in her home on Southeast Stevens Avenue.
Her husband told detectives she shot herself, but later information
indicated there may have been a struggle over the gun, which had
discharged twice.
- Charles
V. Moore: A headless body was discovered July 15, 1989,
in the Columbia River downstream from Corbett Landing. The body
was identified Nov. 30, 1989, as Charles V. Moore, 30, of Portland.
- Gloria
Lima, Amanda Lima and Otto Alvarado: At 9:15 p.m. on
Aug. 15, 1989, Alvaro Alvarado, a native of Guatemala, entered
an apartment on Southeast Holgate Avenue where his estranged common-law
wife, Gloria Lima, 26, had moved. He began arguing with her. A
witness said Alvarado first shot Gloria Lima, then Amanda Lima,
24, and then his cousin, Otto Alvarado, 25. A fourth person was
able to get out of the apartment while being shot at. Alvarado
fled and has never been apprehended.
- Tony
Alvarez: Alvarez, 35, a long-haul trucker from Texas,
was found shot to death in the cab of his Peterbilt tractor in
Troutdale, on Jan. 30, 1990. He was enroute to Olympia, Wash.
- Unidentified
man: The body of a man, 35-40 years old, was found April
29, 1992, in the Columbia River downstream from its confluence
with the Willamette River. He had been shot. The man wore blue
jeans, a long sleeved shirt, long underwear, a dark blue ski mask
and black leather gloves. The man had three loaded clips of ammunition
in his pockets. Fingerprints sent to the Oregon State Police and
FBI were unable to help identify the man.
- Sharon
F. Schlosser: On Oct. 28,1992, the body of Schlosser,
49, of Clackamas, was found in the Columbia River, across from
Kelly Point on the Washington side of the river. Her arms were
bound with rope and she had died of head injuries. Her husband,
Charles, had reported her missing Oct. 21, 1992, having last seen
her the day before. Detectives reopened the case in 1998 and 1999
and information taken to a grand jury. No one has ever been charged
in a criminal case, although the family initiated civil proceedings
in federal court.
- Bonifacio
Rodriguez: Rodriguez’s body was found on the edge
of a field on Gillihan Loop Road on Sauvie Island on Oct. 2, 1994.
He had been shot. Rodriguez, 31, of Portland, was last seen Sept.
25, 1994, and had been reported missing to the Portland Police
Bureau.
- Unidentified
man: Skeletal remains were found May 15, 1996, scattered
in a field north of the Troutdale Airport near Graham Road. The
remains appeared to be of a white male in his mid- to late-40s,
5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7 inches tall. Extensive dental work, including
a gold crown on one molar, was intact. Among the clothing near
the body was a T-shirt with the name “Walla Walla College.”
The man had suffered a double fracture of his left forearm and
both bones showed signs of reconstructive surgery with metal plates
and screws. The remains appear to have been in the field for one
year. The man remains unidentified and the case remains open.
- Thomea
Kampras: Kampras, 51, was found dead on a couch in her
home on Southwest Riverdale Road on March 3, 1998. A handgun was
at her side and she had been shot in the head. She was scheduled
to sign divorce papers that day. The state medical examiner could
not rule the death as a suicide or homicide, but it was agreed
the death was not accidental.
- Marcos
Antonio Lopez: On March 24, 1998, Lopez, 30, of Troutdale,
was found dead and his body engulfed in flames on East Woodard
Road near Northeast Seidl Road near Springdale. Investigators
determined that Lopez had been in an argument with five other
men at a restaurant on March 19, 1998. On March 23, 1998, he was
seen leaving a tavern about the same time as two of the men from
the March 19 argument. One of the men was arrested for being an
ex-convict in possession of a firearm, but no homicide charges
were filed.
