3. I don't currently meet the Minimum Qualifications for Corrections Officer. What can I do to become Qualified?
All applicants must be at least 21 years of age and a US citizen. A current and valid drivers license is also required prior to appointment.
Corrections Officers are required to have the equivalent of an associates degree from an accredited college or university or 2 years work experience as a corrections deputy or related social work. Schooling and work experience can be combined to equal 2 years, but the hours must be full time. Volunteer experience can also be used to meet the minimum qualifications, as long as it is directly related, such as police explorer or Reserve Deputy/Officer.
Deputy Sheriff's are required to have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

4. If I have enough credits to get my bachelors degree but I have not received my degree yet, can I apply?
In order to receive a conditional offer of hire for a Law Enforcement Deputy position, you must have a Bachelor's degree. Applicants who expect to receive their degree within 90 days may apply because the process typically takes 90 days. A hire offer will not be made or confirmed until the degree is received.

5. My 21st birthday is still 3 months away. Can I still apply for Corrections Officer or Deputy Sheriff?
The process takes approximately three to six months from start to possible offer of job hire. A hire offer may only be made to a candidate that is 21 years of age according to the rules of the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). We recommend entering the application process if you are under 21 but will reach the minimum age of 21 by the end of the hiring process.

6. What is a conditional offer of hire?
Candidates in a process that require a physical, psychological exam and or a drug screen may receive a conditional offer of hire that is contingent upon the successful completion of one or more of those components. If you are given a conditional offer, the appropriate appointments will be scheduled for you. If a physical appointment is scheduled, you must meet the physical standards required by the State of Oregon, Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPPST). Psychological results will be based on suitability for the position. If test results are acceptable, the offer will be confirmed.

7. I just completed a Statement of Personal History (SPH) form for MCSO last year. Can I make a photocopy of it and resubmit it?
We appreciate that you took the time and effort to complete an SPH with us in a previous hiring process. The Sheriff’s Office does require a new and original SPH for each hiring process. If there is a joint hiring process, for example Corrections Deputy and Deputy Sheriff, and you have meet the minimum qualifications for both, you will only need one SPH for that process.
The HR department does not provide copies of SPH’s submitted in previous applications to current applicants. We recommend that you make a copy of your SPH before you submit the form, and use that copy for any future hiring processes that you may enter.

8. I have a felony in my past. Will this automatically disqualify me for work inside the Sheriff’s Office?
The Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) will not train or certify people who have a felony on their record [ORS 259-008-0010 (4) (a)]. MCSO is required by law to hire people who are able to attend and pass academy training provided by DPSST. Therefore, MCSO cannot hire people who have felonies into sworn positions (Corrections Deputy and Deputy Sheriff)

9. Do I have to enter the number of credit hours that I have earned at college(s)?
It is to your direct benefit to enter the number of college credit hours that you have earned. Some jobs allow the substitution of credit hours for direct experience. The job announcement specifies when education may substitute for experience. Listing education hours can make the difference of moving forward as a candidate OR being screened out of the process. If you do list college hours please specify either quarter hours or semester hours of credit
