How to File For a Restraining Order

The Civil Unit is responsible for serving court papers and enforcing court orders. The Civil Unit also provides safe care and transportation to mentally ill persons during civil commitment hearings.

The types of court papers include: small claims, divorce papers, subpoenas, child support, restraining orders and evictions papers.

The Sheriff also is the ministerial officer of the court and enforces court orders. This can include: evicting persons from property, enforcing restraining orders, seizing property or taking children into custody for return to a custodial parent.

Each year, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Civil Unit serves over 20,000 individuals, conducts over 1,200 evictions, serves over 2,500 protective orders and transports over 500 mentally ill persons.
