K-9
Unit
503-255-3600
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has one Patrol K-9, Varro.
Varro has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2005.
Prior to working on the road a new K-9 & handler will attend a 400 hour K-9 basic academy and by completion of the academy pass standards/certify with the Oregon Police Canine Association. Once a new team begins working on the road they will train a minimum of 16 hours per month and re-certify annually with the OPCA.
A patrol K-9 has the ability to do the work of 15-20 deputies when searching for a person due to their keen sense of smell and hearing. The benefits a K-9 brings to an agency are not only financial due to reduced man hours during searches, but also officer safety by preventing injuries.
It is the goal of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit to provide support in helping safely locate suspects who have fled, concealed or barricaded themselves in an effort to avoid arrest from any local law enforcement agency.
The personnel assigned to the K-9 Unit are committed to providing professional support services to ensure the safety of the citizens of Multnomah County.
Patrol K-9’s related duties include tracking, article searches, area & building searches, officer protection, high risk/felony car stops and public demonstrations.
